Performance Promise
A journalism page should spend its budget on reporting, not friction. These are our public engineering targets.
Fast by default
We target Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile: LCP at or below 2.5 seconds, INP at or below 200 milliseconds, and CLS at or below 0.1 on mobile and desktop.
Quiet pages
No autoplaying audio. Advertising must not obscure the article, shift the reading layout, or prevent access when an ad blocker is present.
Measured restraint
We minimize third-party scripts, optimize media, and treat performance regressions as product defects. Optional advertising and analytics remain subject to consent where required.
How we hold ourselves accountable
- Test representative article, section, search, and homepage routes on mobile and desktop.
- Track real-user performance where consent and privacy rules allow it.
- Block avoidable regressions in review and investigate sustained field failures.
- Preserve semantic HTML and usable content when optional scripts fail.
